My BlOOD
A new play by Leelou Lapteva
12th-17th August 2024 @theSpaceUK Triplex
Synopsis:
CW: depiction of murder, violence, bereavement; discussions of rape, human trafficking, depression, suicide and sex; religious and occult references.

A gripping piece of new writing, My Blood is a psychological thriller loosely based on Aeschylus' Oresteia. Set in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, we follow the lives of a powerful banking family as they deal with personal tragedy. Devastated by their grief and the justice system's failure to hold their corrupt father accountable, the two adult children of the family decide to take justice into their hands. The arrival of a stranger influences the course of events, and as their plan starts to go wrong it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems...
A note from the writer/director:
I was inspired to start writing this play when I thought about the potential of exploring a story inspired by Greek tragedy in a modern American setting. We tend to think of people in ancient times as being very different to us. It is true that in certain ways and practices they were, but at our core we have never stopped being the same human beings. The tense family dynamics of the Oresteia. and differing beliefs of each member about justice and self-righteousness following devastating loss and betrayal is something I felt I could translate into a modern setting. Every character in the play is inspired by one from the Oresteia. (or in the case of Chloe, two characters). The play is set in an excitingly tense point in time – just after the 2008 Wall Street Crash and follows a powerful banking family during its aftermath as they deal with their own personal tragedy. It's a psychological thriller and crime drama full of twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

After our nearly fully sell out run (4/5 shows sold out!) at the Burton Taylor Studio in Oxford this February, we are ecstatic to be taking My Blood to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2024. The Fringe is the world's leading performing arts festival and an unmissable, dream opportunity for every creative. We are an entirely student founded and run production company made up of a bunch of students all passionate about the arts.
